How to Define a Website in Dreamweaver CS4
There is more than one way to start building a website in Dreamweaver CS4. This is the way I was taught to do it through various tools like lynda.com video tutorials and books like Dreamweaver CS4 for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide.
To begin, select Dreamweaver Site under the Create New section of the Dreamweaver welcome screen (middle section).

Name your website. I called this one Example, but you should name yours so that it is unique to the project/client. Most likely if you have Dreamweaver, you are planning on creating more than one website so it is important to differentiate between them.
For now, leave the HTTP address blank. Others fill this information out from the beginning, but I like to wait until the site is complete. Click Next.

Keep Edit local copies on my machine, then uplaod to server when ready (recommended) selected. Make sure your folder is correct. It should automatically go to your Website folder. Hit Next.

Until the site is completed, choose None for How do you connect to your remote server? I like to keep it set as None to ensure there are no accidental moves of uploading or downloading. Hit Next.

This is the summary of the information you have just completed. Hit Done.

You have successfully defined your website in Dreamweaver CS4. There is now a folder called Example in your Files in the lower right hand corner of your Dreamweaver screen.

You are now ready to create the first page of your website, visit my directions on How To Create a Website Page in Dreamweaver CS4 to get started today.
